LEGO Review 2010 Modular Set 10197 – Fire Brigade

The Lego Modular series has been a great hit for the company. Taking the concept of the highly detailed Creator models, beefing them up in piece count and size, adding minifigs and allowing them to be joined together has attracted many older Lego collectors to the line. The Fire Brigade is the last release for 2009 and adds to the three models already released; Market Street, Cafe Corner and Green Grocer.

Like other sets in this series the model is made to fit along a main street diorama, so the building comes complete with a segment of shiny sidewalk out the front. Its a beautiful looking building, no surprises there, and it is nice to see a Lego station that isn’t all windows or open spaces as the regular line tends to be.

This is the first set of this kind to also feature a vehicle, in this case a fire engine modelled after a 1930’s fire truck. Like all the modular buildings the set is designed so that the roof and each successive floor is detachable so you can access each level of the station to play and customise.

Like the Green Grocer before it, this set has the beginning of playability inside with a ping pong table for bored firemen to bide their time and a fully stocked fridge in the kitchen. Other details include fire-fighting tools, racks for the firemen’s helmets, a fire-pole, couch, bookshelf and a roof with a water tower and bell.

The set measures 14″ (35 cm) high and 10″ (25 cm) wide and with over 2200 pieces it is recommended for building by ages 16+. As with most sets in Lego’s range, experienced younger builders could build this with a little patience and consideration. If you have the other modular sets its a great addition but would happily serve as the first one on your new Main Street.

Getting Cheap Train Tickets

If you are a travel by train aficionado, you, most likely, are always on the lookout for a cheap price on railroad tickets. Railroad travel is a blast if you have the time to get to your destination. It is more comfortable than airplane travel and more relaxing than driving your way to your destination. Traveling by train offers the opportunity for a lot of sightseeing as you whiz through the country side. Cheap ticket prices are out there, but you have to know where to look.

Newsletters

Look up and subscribe to a few travel newsletters. The publishers of the newsletters usually have a heads up on the latest railroad deals and point out discounted or cheap railroad fares. If you do a web search for railroad travel newsletters, you will find countless websites that offers free newsletters. Travel agent sites usually have newsletters or news blasts advertising vacation specials and discounted rates, as well.

Off Season Travel

Traveling in the off season is a great way to find cheap train fares. Destination travel and railroads will often offer lower than normal rail fares to entice travel during times of low ridership. If you travel Amtrak, your little ones under twelve years of age are eligible for half fare rates if one adult pays full fare.

Travel Rewards

If you travel by train frequently, especially Amtrak, check out if they have a rewards program. Collecting your travel points will make you eligible for no cost or discounted travel. The no cost or discounted fares may have qualifiers, such as the points can only be redeemed during certain times or the points may only be valid for a certain amount of time. If your travel time is flexible and you travel by train a lot, that could work for you.

Book In Advance and/or Group Booking

Booking your rail pass well in advance will usually save you a bundle. The closer your departure day gets, the more expensive your fare will be. Group tickets, a minimum of ten in most cases, usually get a discounted rail fare. Plan your railroad travel with others who have the same destination but not necessarily the same agenda.

Online Booking

If you book your own travel online with a cyber travel agent or book directly with the railroad will eliminate booking charges or handling fees. Railroads will offer reduced rail fares to online travel sites if bookings are slow. The online travel site does the work, the consumer gets a discounted rate and the railroad sells rail passage. Everybody wins.

The Direct Approach

Call the railroad ticket office and ask what the going rate of rail passage is and if they have any specials, deals or sales happening. Sometimes, they have unadvertised deals that you might be able to hook into. Ask about non peak time ticket prices. Departing at 11am may be cheaper than departing at 7am when most travelers want to hit the rails.
